Decision of the Holy Synod on the cheirotonia of Archim. Meletiy (Spasov) for a bishop with the title „Znepolski” („of Znepole”)

Today, 10th September 2024, the Holy Synod, full committee, under the presiding of His Holiness the Patriarch of Bulgaria Daniil decided the Very Reverend Father Archimandrite Meletiy (Spasov), Rector of Sofia Theological Seminary „St. Yoan Rilski”, to be ordained into a bishop’s rank.

The election of Archimandrite Meletiy with the title „Znepolski” („of Znepole”) was performed today in the Synodical Palace, and the bishop’s cheirotonia is going to be performed on 15th September 2024 (Sunday) from 9:00 am in the Patriarchal Cathedral „St. Alexander Nevsky”. After the cheirotonia Bishop Meletiy is going to continue his ministry as a Rector of Sofia Theological Seminary „St. Yoan Rilski”.

Biography of Archim. Meletiy (Spasov)

Archimandrite Meletiy (Spasov) was born in Sofia in 1985. He completed his secondary education in 2005 at 31st Secondary School for Foreign Languages and Mathematics „Ivan Vazov” with German Language profile. In the same year he was admitted as a student at the Faculty of Theology at Sofia University „St. Kliment Ohridski”, which he graduated in 2009 as a Bachelor of Theology with pedagogical qualification. In the academic year 2007/2008 he was specializing Theology at the University of Jena (Germany). In 2013 he successfully accomplished a Master Degree at the Classical Philology Department at Sofia University „St. Kliment Ohridski”. In 2012 he was accepted as a novice at the Monastery of Divotino „Holy Trinity”, where he was tonsured as a monk on 23rd June 2014 by the Bishop of Branitsa Grigoriy, as he was led under the mantle by the abbot, Archimandrite Pahomiy. In 2015 he was ordained as hierodeacon and hieromonk by Bishop Grigoriy. In the period of 2016 – 2017 he was sent at a theological specialization at General Church Doctoral School „St. Cyril and St. Methodius” in Moscow. Since 2017 he has been a Vice Rector on the learning activity of the Sofia Theological Seminary and a teacher on the Holy Scripture of the New Testament. Since then, he has been a head of the Seminary Choir. Since 2018 he has been a part-time doctoral student of Philosophy at Sofia University „St. Kliment Ohridski”. On 22nd June 2022 he was ordained in the rank of Archimandrite by the Metropolitan of Stara Zagora Cyprian.
